Shrewsbury Prison: Self-Guided Tour

The Experience
Upon arrival, you will receive a visitor guide and map to help you navigate the prison. Use the sound boxes to learn fascinating facts about its history, while information boards provide intriguing background details. Staff will be available to assist you and answer any questions you may have.

Start your exploration at the reception area, where prisoners were processed, then move on to the two prison wings that house nearly 200 cells. Next, visit the healthcare section to see how medical needs were addressed.

Make your way to the visits area, the only place where prisoners could meet people from outside, before walking through two exercise yards that allowed for daily fresh air. Continue on to the segregation section, where inmates were isolated from the general population, and step into the executioner’s bedroom, where Albert Pierrepoint once spent the night before carrying out his duties.

Finally, visit the condemned man’s cell, a haunting space where inmates spent their last days before facing execution.

Conclude your visit at the museum and gift shop, where you can find a variety of Shrewsbury Prison memorabilia to remember your time behind bars.

Important Information
When arriving at Shrewsbury Prison, you will see a large 'Welcome to Shrewsbury Prison' sign to the left of the main entrance. Through the large metal gates, you will find Shrewsbury Prison visitor centre where one of our friendly Customer Service Assistants will welcome you, supplying you with a map, Activity Booklets and directing you to your starting point.

This voucher is for two people to enjoy the tour. 

Spectators
Spectators are not allowed. Anybody wishing to join the tour must have their own voucher.

There is no dress code.
